Eating Lobster

Is lobster good for you?
Lobster is in fact very good for you! It is very high in protein and low fat.  There are about 120g of protein in one lobster.  Of course the nutritional value decreases with all the butter and other things  added when it is consumed, but it is still a healthy food choice.

How do you traditionally cook a lobster?
The most common and traditional way to cook a lobster is to boil it.  You must start with a live lobster in order to have the best result.  It is very simple, all you have to do is boil a big pot of water and add two tablespoons of salt for every two liters.  When the water is boiling you drop the lobster in head first.  Then cover the pot and let the lobster sit for about 15 minutes.  When the lobster is bright red and the tail is curled under, the lobster is done!

How do you eat a lobster?
Eating a lobster can be a bit difficult and there are different ways to go about it.  Tearing off the legs is a good way to start.  Once you take off the legs and suck out the meat from inside, you can move on to the claws.  Grasp the claws and gently twist them off from the body, they should come off easily.  Tear off the smaller, moveable part of the claw, then using a cracker, crack the top part.  You may then use your finger to simply push the meat out through the hole.  When finished with both claws it is time for the tail.  With one hand on the tail and one grasping the body of the lobster, you can separate the tail from the body with a twisting motion.  Break the tail flippers off and you may then, using either a fork or your finger, force the meat out of the opposite end.  Remove the digestive tract which runs down the middle before eating.  There is also meat inside the flippers that may be accessed when breaking them open.  Then separate the shell from the body and remove the tomalley and roe, the red and green stuff, then eat the body!  You have successfully eaten a lobster.

How many different kinds of lobsters are there?
There are two types of lobster that are available to eat, the clawed lobster and the spiny lobster.  Clawed lobsters are separated into two categories, american and european, which just refer to the relative area that they are caught in.  Clawed lobsters are found in cold shallow waters.  Before they are cooked, american clawed lobsters are brown, while european are bluish in color.  Clawed lobsters generally have more meat than spiny lobsters.  The most of their meat can be found in the upper legs and claws.

Spiny lobsters are found more in warm waters.  Unlike the clawed lobsters, they do not have large claws, but have a very large tail.  The tail is also where the majority of the meat is.
